Born into afamilyof court musicians.Although Khan was a devout Muslim, he was considered a symbolofreligious harmony and accompanied his uncle in playingatceremonies for Hindu deities, as well as at weddings. Hisplayingat the All-India Music Conference in Calcutta in 1937 wonfame forhimself and respect for the shehnai as a classicalmusicinstrument.Bismillah Khan was awarded the Padma Shri (1961), PadmaBhushan(1968), Padma Vibhushan (1980) and the Bharat Ratna in2001.Thisfiery red, five stringed, electric Shehnai added a trulyHe was thethird musician to receive the highest civilian honor, theBharatRatna, after Pandit Ravi Shankar and MS Subbulakshmi.While keeping the magic of shehnai alive round the world,Bismillahtried his hand at some movies as well. Later on January 26, 1950, he evenperformed at,yet again, Red Fort on the eve of India\'s firstRepublic Day.Continuing his musical presence, he was invited in theWorldExposition in Montreal.He believed that music has nothing to do with caste andreligion.Although he was a dedicated Shi\'ite Muslim, he was astaunchdevotee of the Hindu goddess of music, Saraswati.Ustad Bismillah Khan was admitted to Heritage Hospital on August17,2006 and four days later, died of a cardiac arrest on August212006.
